The Democratic Alliance in the Mpofana Local Municipality has written to the Municipal Manager, Hlulukwenza Dladla, to request a full investigation into the mayoral vehicle that was allegedly involved in an accident.

It has come to our attention that the Mayor's vehicle was involved in an accident on the 18th July 2021 at about 22h55. There are allegations that:

1) The Mayor was not in the vehicle during the time of the accident.

2) The driver was not one of the Mayor's bodyguards.

3) The driver was inebriated during the time of the accident.

4) The assigned bodyguard to the vehicle was inebriated and utilising the vehicle for entertainment purposes.

The vehicle in question crashed into municipal property of which the fencing was damaged. See here and here.

The Municipal Manager needs to explain the current whereabouts of the mayor's vehicle as well as the proper procedures for the vehicle when the mayor is on and off duty.

We are calling for the Municipal Manager to explain if the vehicle in question was authorized to be there at the time of the accident and if so, who authorized it and for what reason. We also want to know if any cases have been opened and who will be held accountable for any misuse and destruction of municipal assets.

He must ensure that municipal property is protected and used for its designated use. We cannot have people exploiting municipal assets at the expense of ratepayers.

The DA will continue to fight for transparent and accountable governance in Mpofana. The DA has shown that where we govern, we get things done.
