In light of the most recent crime statistics, which highlight a disturbing increase in violence against women and children, the Democratic Alliance (DA) calls on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to urgently accelerate the deployment of new technology in the fight against crime.

Despite repeated assurances from SAPS that they are exploring technological solutions, there remains a concerning lack of a clear timeline for implementation. The rise in contact crimes, particularly the alarming rates of rape and murder, underscores the immediate need for innovative and effective tools to protect our communities.

The safety of our citizens, especially the most vulnerable among us, cannot be compromised by delays. It is imperative that SAPS prioritises this critical issue and provides the public with a definitive timeline for the rollout of these technologies. The time for action is now; we cannot afford to wait any longer.

The DA-led City of Cape Town has started implementing innovative crime-fighting initiatives such as drones, dashcams, bodycams, and an ‘eye in the sky’ two-seater aircraft equipped with cutting-edge features. We believe that, especially in the context of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Minister Mchunu, SAPS, the Western Cape Government and City of Cape Town, these innovations will start yielding significant results.

It has never been more crucial for all spheres of government to collaborate their efforts to curb criminality.

The DA urges the Minister and SAPS to actively tackle criminality, strengthen our police force with new technology strategies, and gain confidence with communities through robust engagement to win the war on crime.
