Kamal Singhala, the son of Ajay Gupta has had his South African citizenship revoked by Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, a move that has been welcomed by the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Singhala was granted citizenship in 2015, by then Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba, less than a year after his first application was rejected, as recommended by the Home Affairs Review Committee.
DA Home Affairs spokesperson Adrian Roos said Schreiber’s decision to revoke the citizenship reflects action being taken to remedy the wrongs of the era of State capture, which the Gupta family allegedly orchestrated.
In May, Ajay Gupta was imprisoned for two weeks, in India, on an unrelated issue, while his brothers Atul and Rajesh are wanted in South Africa for fraud and money laundering related to State capture.
“At the height of State capture, the Gupta family exerted influence at the highest levels of government, manipulating State structures for their own benefit. If there are any remaining vestiges of this dark period, they must be rooted out, and we believe this process is a significant step toward doing just that,” Roos said.
