Amid the current financial strain faced by Matjhabeng Local Municipality, the Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the decisive action taken by the South African Police Services' Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) to block payment of R23 million to a security company accused of corruption.
The Hawks stepped in to prevent the transfer of R23 million from the municipality's bank account to the security company, which stands accused of fraud and contravening the Municipal Finance Management Act.
In 2021, members of the Hawks' Serious Corruption Investigation team in Welkom were called upon to probe alleged irregularities in the procurement process leading to the company's appointment by Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
This move by the Hawks is commendable, as it protects public funds from being siphoned off by unscrupulous entities. It is especially significant in the context of Matjhabeng's ongoing struggles with cable theft and government property vandalization. The exorbitant amount claimed by the security company further indicates its dubious intentions of profiting from the municipality without delivering the promised services.
The DA is committed to ensuring transparency and accountability. To shed light on this matter, we will pose relevant questions during the next ordinary council sitting, seeking clarity on the alleged services provided by the company and the municipal official responsible for authorizing the payment without adhering to proper procedures.
Issued by Dr Igor Scheurkogel - DA Caucus Leader Matjhabeng Local Municipality
