The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Dihlabeng Local Municipality is concerned about the continued closure of the swimming pools in Bethlehem and Bakenpark, which is a vital source of recreation for our community.
During our recent oversight of these facilities, we sought answers from the acting Director surrounding this issue. The swimming pools in question were last accessible to the public in 2020. Their closure stems from the damaged fibreglass lining, which presents a safety hazard. Despite these challenges, there is a budget of R1,500,000 specifically designated for the maintenance of these swimming pools.
The DA proposes:
Temporary Repairs and Reopening: obtaining quotes to temporarily repair the damaged fibreglass within the current budget.
Comprehensive Renovation: Simultaneously, urgent renovations to the pool buildings and surrounding grounds.
Dedicated project management resources with strictly monitored time frames and expenditure plans.
Investing in the recreational facilities is an investment in the community's future. By revamping these swimming pools, we aim to reignite community spirit, promote physical well-being, and create a positive environment for our youth to thrive.
We pledge to tirelessly advocate for the swift implementation of the proposed repairs and renovations. We will work closely with the municipality to ensure the allocated budget is utilised effectively, guaranteeing the prompt reopening of the swimming pools. Additionally, we are in active communication with the Municipal Manager, pressing for urgent action on these proposals.
