In light of the recently disclosed quarterly report for the period concluding on 30 September 2023, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nketoana Local Municipality is concerned about the allocation of funds in contracts valued under R 200,000.

Within this report, an instance highlights the provision of water to the Petsana neighbourhood in Reitz using trucks equipped with JoJo water tanks. Astonishingly, the cost for a mere two months totals R 198,029, averaging an exorbitant monthly expenditure of R 99,015. This excessive spending persists, despite the availability of a more cost-effective alternative, the installation of PVC pipes with stand taps. Not only would this represent a one-time expense, but it would also guarantee a consistent water supply at a fraction of the current cost.

The unchecked squandering of public funds on inefficient water supply methods directly impacts the residents of Petsana. The current situation not only imposes an unnecessary financial burden on the community but also jeopardizes the reliability of their water supply. By transitioning to a more cost-effective and stable solution, we aim to alleviate the financial strain on residents and guarantee a consistent, secure water source.

We are committed to rectifying this ongoing trend of financial mismanagement by the municipality. Despite our persistent and cost-effective recommendations, the wasteful expenditure continues unabated, contradicting the DA's steadfast commitment to prudence.

To address this issue promptly, we pledge to urge the municipality to initiate a thorough review of the Petsana water supply contract. Simultaneously, we will engage with relevant stakeholders to propose and implement the installation of PVC pipes with taps to supply water to households, ensuring a more economical and sustainable water supply solution.
