South Africa recorded 5 920 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Thursday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Thursday, the country recorded 3 546 808 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 51 new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 92 989.

The NICD said the 5 920 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 14.3% positivity rate.

Gauteng has recorded 1 152 844 cumulative confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 633 396 and the Western Cape 616 632.

Most new cases on Thursday were recorded in the Western Cape, which accounted for 25% of new infections, followed by Gauteng with 20%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 19%; the Eastern Cape and Limpopo 9% each; Mpumalanga and North West 5% each; and Free State and Northern Cape 4% each.

The Western Cape recorded 1 491 new cases on Thursday, Gauteng 1 198 and KwaZulu-Natal 1 142.

There were 293 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Thursday, 8 223 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 21 695 982 cumulative tests, of which 41 438 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

According to the Department of Health, 28 782 337 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 86 351 were administered on Thursday.

To date, 15 976 802 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 053 285 vaccine doses have been administered.
