South Africa recorded 1 995 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, representing an 7.5% positivity rate.

Five Covid-19 deaths were also reported in the last 48 hours, taking the confirmed death toll to 99 458.

Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 37% of new infections, followed by the Western Cape with 21%. KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 17%; Mpumalanga 6%; Free State and North West 5% each; the Eastern Cape 4%; Limpopo and the Northern Cape 1% each.

Gauteng recorded 747 new cases on Wednesday, the Western Cape 425 and KwaZulu-Natal 335.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 3 677 686 laboratory-confirmed cases.

Gauteng has recorded 1 194 215 cumulative cases, KwaZulu-Natal 652 706 and the Western Cape 640 666.

There were 55 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Wednesday, 2 659 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa conducted 23 138 425 Covid-19 tests, and 26 608 of those were carried out on Wednesday.

According to the Department of Health, 31 764 283 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 104 643 were administered on Wednesday.

To date, 17 057 408 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 635 827 doses have been administered.
