Gauteng has become the first province to reach one-million Covid-19 cases.
On Tuesday, the province recorded 8 445 new cases, bringing the province's total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 1 005 360. The province accounted for 64% of the country's new cases.
South Africa recorded 13 147 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday.
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Tuesday, the country recorded 3 051 222 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 27 new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 90 002.
"The NICD… reports that 13 147 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 24.9% positivity rate," the NICD said.
After Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal recorded the second highest number of cases with 524 317, followed by the Western Cape with 523 739.
While most new cases on Tuesday were recorded in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 11% of new cases (1 396), followed by the Western Cape with 6% (805). North West accounted for 5%; Mpumalanga 4%; the Eastern Cape, Free State and Limpopo 3% each; and the Northern Cape 1%.
There were 383 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Tuesday, 3 798 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.
South Africa conducted 19 838 883 cumulative tests, of which 52 890 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.
According to the Department of Health, 26 639 293 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 140 281 were administered in the last 24-hour cycle. To date, 14 908 370 adults are fully vaccinated, and 652 197 children have received one vaccine dose.
