South Africa recorded 2 226 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Sunday.
According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Sunday, the country recorded 3 603 856 laboratory-confirmed cases. In the last 48 hours, 15 new Covid-19-related deaths were reported, bringing the confirmed death toll to 95 022.
The NICD said the 2 226 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 9.5% positivity rate.
Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng, which accounted for 34% of new infections, followed by the Western Cape with 16%. KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga each accounted for 13% of the new cases; Limpopo and North West 7% each; Free State 6%; Eastern Cape 4%; and Northern Cape 3%.
Gauteng recorded 756 new cases on Sunday, the Western Cape 351 and KwaZulu-Natal 256. There were 23 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Sunday, 5 483 people were in public and private hospitals for Covid-19.
Gauteng recorded 1 167 714 cumulative cases, KwaZulu-Natal 627 856 and the Western Cape 642 474.
South Africa has conducted 22 251 589 cumulative tests, of which 23 347 were carried out in the past 24-hour reporting cycle.
According to the Department of Health, 29 812 348 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 4 742 were administered on Sunday.
To date, 16 446 954 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 1 219 765 vaccine doses have been administered.
