South Africa recorded 11 106 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday.
According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 3 494 696 laboratory-confirmed cases. There have been 110 new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the confirmed death toll to 91 561.
The NICD said the 11 106 new Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa represented a 22.2% positivity rate.
As of Wednesday, Gauteng recorded 1 141 605 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 621 811 and the Western Cape 603 264.
KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape recorded the highest number of new cases and accounted for 26% of new infections each, followed by Gauteng with 19%. The Eastern Cape accounted for 11%; Free State 5%; North West 4%; and Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape 3% each.
KwaZulu-Natal recorded 2 863 new cases on Wednesday, the Western Cape 2 834 and Gauteng 2 156.
There were 349 new hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. As of Wednesday, 8 887 people were in hospital for Covid-19.
South Africa conducted 21 394 263 cumulative tests, of which 49 970 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.
According to the Department of Health, 28 164 339 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 64 724 were administered on Wednesday.
To date, 15 702 030 adults are fully vaccinated. Among children aged 12 and older, 947 167 vaccine doses have been administered.
