The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the North West province congratulates the provincial ANC for holding a successful 9th conference, which took place from the 13th to the 14th of August 2022, and officially concluded its business on the 28th of August 2022.
As COSATU, we commend the ANC for finally convening this conference. We view this step as an achievement considering that the provincial party last held a conference seven years ago, in 2015. This was in contravention of the party’s constitution, which instructs provinces to hold conferences every four years.
We also welcome this attainment because the ANC in the province has been led by an interim structure since 2018. Its leadership and members can now take pride in the constitutional structure that has been elected by the conference.
COSATU congratulates the newly elected Provincial Executive Committee. For the first time in the history of the ANC in the North West, out of thirty-five members in the PEC, twenty-one are women. As a country, we support gender parity in all spheres. We therefore applaud this move and believe that it must be celebrated by all. The ANC Women’s League must be proud of this outcome.
The ANC PEC has a responsibility to unite the province and to ensure that the people of the North West are afforded the service they deserve from the leadership of the province. Additionally, its immediate task is to convene the Provincial General Council(PGC) to finalise the policy discussions which were not concluded in the conference.
We support the provincial chairperson’s commitment as stated in his acceptance speech, that the party’s Provincial Secretary must immediately convene the Alliance Secretariat which will spearhead the implementation of the work of the Alliance and to build a strong united Alliance in the province.
