The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Gauteng expresses its deep concern and condemnation regarding the ongoing chaos and instability within the Joburg City Council, despite the recent appointment of a new speaker.

This Council was entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring effective governance, service delivery, and stability in the city. However, recent events have painted a distressing picture of internal discord and political maneuvering that has compromised the ability of the council to fulfil its mandate. COSATU Gauteng acknowledges the importance of a functional and stable municipal government in Joburg to address the pressing needs of its residents. The citizens deserve a council that prioritizes their well-being and works cohesively towards sustainable development and improved service delivery.

While the appointment of a new speaker was seen as a positive step towards restoring order, it is disheartening to witness continued infighting and power struggles that hinder the effective functioning of the council. The people of Joburg cannot afford to bear the brunt of political egos at the expense of their basic needs.

COSATU Gauteng calls on all political parties involved in the coalition to prioritize the interests of the people above their individual or party agendas. The residents of Joburg deserve a council that works diligently to address the challenges facing the city, from unemployment and housing shortages to infrastructure development and social services.

It is imperative for the elected representatives to put aside their differences, engage in constructive dialogue, and find common ground for the greater good of the city and its inhabitants. We urge all stakeholders to prioritize stability and cooperation within the council to ensure that the promises made during the election campaign translate into tangible improvements in the lives of the people.

The Federation remains committed to advocating for the rights and interests of workers and the broader community. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and engage with relevant stakeholders to encourage a swift resolution to the challenges facing the Joburg City Council.

AMANDLA!
