In the statement below, we erroneously named the contractor as Concor. We would like to correct this as follows:

This is not correct and the contractor working on this project is in fact Condocor. Concor and Condocor are not linked in anyway.

I would like to apologise for naming Concor as the contractor. Furthermore, I would also like to apologise for any harm and reputational damage caused to Concor by our incorrect statement.

The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development is constantly wasting taxpayers’ money that is meant to uplift the lives of our residents. During a recent oversight inspection of the Kopanong Hospital, we discovered that this R208 million facility is still incomplete.

So far R122 million has been spent on this project, yet there is nothing to show for it.

The addition of a new building to this hospital was started in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and was supposed to be completed by 2021. This project is far from completion and there are serious issues with the contractor, Condocor and the sub-contractors.

The MEC for Health Nomathemba Mokgethi and the MEC for Infrastructure Development, Tasneem Motara have not yet inspected this project and have no clue what the true state of the Kopanong hospital is. If they had, then both the MECs would have reported the issues to the oversight committee.

According to both departments, this project was on target and should have been completed within the stipulated time frame.

The delay in this project once again points to the lack of expertise and project management skills within this department.

The contractor has also failed to pay the sub-contractors and GDID has also failed to upskill the SMMEs involved in this project.

Furthermore, we also discovered that the weeds are at least two metres high, and the workmanship is shoddy. In addition, there is no security, and it is only a matter of time before we will see this project being vandalised.

We will be requesting that both the MEC for Health and the MEC for Infrastructure Development appear before the Infrastructure Development Portfolio Committee to account for the millions of rands wasted on this project.

Our residents deserve a government that is committed to ensuring that every rand spent is value for money.

Issued by Nico De Jager MPL - DA Gauteng Spokesperson for Infrastructure Development
