The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Land Reform, Environment, Mineral Resources and Energy, Ms Tebogo Modise, has noted with sadness the news of the tragic death of 11 mine workers and 75 seriously injured at Impala Platinum Mine in the North West. It is reported that a cage plunged down the shaft after a conveyance cable snapped.
Ms Modise said waking up to such devastating and heartbreaking news of such a terrible mining accident was shocking. She said the committee extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes those who are injured a speedy recovery.
“We are together with the families in this time of grief and praying with them for the Almighty to give them comfort. We also pray for the recovery of those who are injured and to be back home soon to be with their loved ones,” said Ms Modise.
The Chairperson said the committee welcomes the response by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to start an investigation into what transpired at the Impala Platinum Mine.
“We urge all the stakeholders to work together with government to put this matter to rest as everyone is looking for answers. The outcomes of the investigation will assist government to improve the safety of mines and to ensure that such events do not happen,” said Ms Modise. “May their souls rest in peace.”
