Chamber of Mines offices bearers Mike Teke, Graham Briggs and Andile Sangqu, Chamber of Mines CEO, Roger Baxter, along with Anglo American Platinum CEO, Chris Griffith, today participated in a multi-stakeholder leadership meeting called by the Minister of Mineral Resources, Adv Ngoako Ramathlodi. The focus of the meeting was a consideration of the challenges currently faced by the mining industry, including recent and potential job losses, and the identification of possible solutions.
Says Roger Baxter, CEO of the Chamber of Mines: “The meeting was constructive and comes at a critical juncture as mining companies face a ‘perfect storm’ – weak commodity prices combined with spiralling costs. The mining industry is supportive of collaboration between all stakeholders ensuring that the mining industry continues to play a fundamental wealth creation role in South Africa. Simply put, mining matters for South Africa.”
A number of task teams have been established to come up with practical short- and medium-term interventions, and these task teams will report back to the leadership group towards the end of next week. The Chamber will be a committed participant in this work.
