The conference, organised by the Western Cape Government Education Department with contributions from the City's Economic Development and Investment Department, sought to emphasise the collaborative efforts being made to foster tourism education in schools and their young students.

Alderman Vos praised educators, calling them ‘the bedrock of our society’ and highlighting their role in shaping future leaders in tourism. There has been increasing interest in tourism among young people, with 22 000 Grade 12 learners in the Western Cape taking the Tourism National Senior Certificate Examination this year – an interest that will support Cape Town's tourism potential.

The conference underscored the critical link between education and tourism, highlighting strategies to ensure Cape Town's continued growth as a top global destination.

‘Every 30 new tourists create one new job. Tourism contributes 8,6% to South Africa's economy and accounts for 9,2% of total employment. With these statistics, it showcases the importance of subjects like tourism. It can spark learners’ interest and drive for this vital sector and steer them in this direction as a possible future career. Teachers are also helping to invest in the tourism of our city by teaching our next generation the value of this industry.

‘This industry is continuing to grow, as seen by recent successes, including record-breaking visitor numbers and significant economic impact.

‘Cape Town International Airport processed just under 11 million passengers in the past year, a record high. We now connect Cape Town with 31 destinations and land 215 international flights every week,’ said Alderman Vos.

Looking ahead, Alderman Vos outlined ambitious plans to sustain and elevate Cape Town's tourism industry.

‘We will re-target key source markets in North America, Europe, South America, and Asia, while increasing our reach in China. Our focus on responsible tourism will ensure Cape Town remains a captivating, safe, and enriching destination for all.

‘By working together and embracing Cape Town’s unique spirit, we can empower our tourism industry and communities. Volumes and values will drive business, create jobs, and make Cape Town the city of choice,’ said Alderman Vos.
