Heads of SADC competition authorities have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU ensures cooperation between SADC competition authorities and strengthens the effective enforcement of competition law in each of the member state.

Eight countries in the fifteen member block signed the MOU, namely:

  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Malawi;
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Mozambique;
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Namibia;
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Seychelles;
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of South Africa;
  • The Competition Authority of the Kingdom of Swaziland;
  • The Competition Authority of the United Republic of Tanzania; and
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Zambia.

The other seven members of the block are:

  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Angola;
  • The Competition Authority of the Democratic Republic of Congo;
  • The Competition Authority of the Kingdom of Lesotho; and
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Madagascar ;
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Mauritius;
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic of Malawi; and
  • The Competition Authority of the Republic Zimbabwe.

The MOU follows the signing of the SADC Declaration on Regional Cooperation in Competition and Consumer Policies of 2009 by SADC heads of state committing SADC countries to cooperate in the areas of competition and consumer protection. “The MOU provides a framework for cooperation in competition enforcement within the SADC region and we are delighted to be part of this historic initiative,” said Competition Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele.
