Coalition discussions have understandably taken centre stage in the days following the election results, and these will probably continue up to, and possibly beyond, the first session of the seventh Parliament, which is due to convene on 17th June.

In all the excitement and apprehension surrounding these talks, however, it is important not to lose sight of some very significant aspects of the elections, both good and bad. There is much to learn from them, and many of these points will require attention regardless of which parties eventually join with the ANC in governing the country.
