The Democratic Alliance in eThekwini is saddened by the tragic death of 31-year-old student activist Xolani Ngema, who was gunned down outside Mangosuthu University of Technology in Umlazi.
We mourn with the Family, Students of MUT, the community of Umlazi and extend our sincere condolences.
Ngema was a former MUT student who served as a leader in several university organisations. He was dedicated to student growth until his life was cut short by ruthless criminals who shot him in broad daylight.
His tragic murder comes just 14 days after another individual was gunned down in the same precinct.
Crime continues to grip our communities in eThekwini, with little to no assistance from law enforcement. There appears to be a lack of political will to address safety and security issues, while important crime-fighting agencies such as Metro Police and SAPS remain under resourced.
We urge eThekwini's leadership to implement strong crime-fighting efforts, such as greater police visibility in high-crime areas like Umlazi and iNanda.
The DA will also write to the city manager and law enforcement, recommending concrete measures to curb crime in the city.
Issued by Nomfundo Khubone - DA Councillor
