The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL), a firm adherent to the ANC's principles of non-racialism and non-sexism, and a strong proponent of gender equality, wishes to convey its deep-seated concerns and disappointment regarding the recent statements uttered by the ANC National Chairperson, Comrade Gwede Mantashe, at a 2019 Manifesto Review rally
held in Dr WB Rubusana Region in the Eastern Cape this past weekend.
Comrade Gwede Mantashe's statement, in which he suggests that a woman should not be physically harmed with a physical stick but with that of a man provided by God, carries deeply troubling and unacceptable implications. These remarks are not only offensive but also perpetuate a harmful and perilous narrative that plays a role in normalizing violence against
women. This type of rhetoric not only sanctions physical abuse but also cultivates a culture that undermines the independence and dignity of women.
The ANCWL firmly believes in a society free from all forms of violence and discrimination. We condemn any language or action that undermines the dignity, safety, and well-being of women. It is essential for leaders and public figures to be mindful of the power their words hold, and to exercise responsible and respectful discourse.
Rape culture is a pervasive issue that continues to plague our society. The implication of Cde Gwede Mantashe's remarks exacerbates this deeply ingrained problem. It perpetuates a culture where women's bodies are objectified and violated, reinforcing harmful stereotypes that normalise and trivialise sexual violence, including marital rape. It is our collective duty to challenge and dismantle the attitudes and behaviours that enable such a culture to persist.
We call on all members and leaders of the ANC, including Cde Gwede Mantashe, to reflect on the impact of their words and to actively work towards promoting a culture of respect, equality, and non-violence.
In light of this incident, the ANCWL will be engaging with the officials of the ANC to ensure that appropriate action is taken to address this matter and to promote a more inclusive and respectful discourse within our progressive organisation.
We further encourage all members of society to join us in advocating for a South Africa where women are treated with the dignity, respect, and equality they deserve.
