The African National Congress has learned with sadness of the passing of Comrade Bongani Isidore Mbatha who is one of our sterling combatants in uMkhonto Wesizwe. Comrade Mbatha joined the military wing of the ANC in 1978 when he went to into exile. He was integrated into the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and rose in the ranks to a Lieutenant General and was assigned the responsibility and promoted to Chief of Logistics of SANDF.
Comrade Mbatha ranks amongst those after receiving military training was charged with protection of our camps in exile. He was later deployed as head of logistics in Angola at MK Headquarters. He was amongst those who managed repatriation of arms following the successful negotiations in the country. As a committed combatant, he joined SANDF where his experience became valuable. His steadfastness in ensuring the success of our country he has contrived immensely in the transformation of our Defence Force which is now ranked amongst the best in our continent.
His contribution will be missed as we forge ahead with our responsibility to take the country forward. His selfless commitment has made our country a better place today. As the ANC we lower our revolutionary flag in honor of this distinguished South African. Comrade Mbatha lives behind his wife Rosario, son Alvaro, daughters Nomathemba, Zandi and Asinathi. To them and other family members, we say their loss is our loss. To them we convey our condolences. May his rest in peace. Hamba Kahle Mkhonto!
