The ANC-PA coalition in Cederberg Municipality continues to subvert democracy by refusing to cede power following their by-election loss to the majority CE-DA-FF-Plus coalition on October 12.

The CE-DA-FF-Plus victory cost the ANC-PA their majority in Council, but they have stubbornly clung to power, using unlawful and manipulative tactics to avoid being removed from office.

Their refusal to cede power reflects their contempt for the voters of Cederberg, and their disdain for the rule of law.

The DA and its coalition partners, Cederberg First and Freedom Front Plus, have written to the Speaker demanding that the council meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, 16 November 2022, proceeds and that the motions of no confidence be served before council.

The CE-DA-FF-Plus coalition is also considering approaching the courts, to ensure the will of Cederberg voters is respected. We shall also seek a personal cost order against those responsible for thwarting the democratic process in Cederberg municipality. The ratepayers of Cederberg cannot be expected to pay the legal fees of political thugs who are subverting South Africa's hard-won constitutional democracy.
