In 1955 progressive South Africans led and united by the ANC and fraternal organisations met in Kliptown, Soweto in what is called the Congress of the People to adopt the Freedom Charter. In this historic forum the people declared that “There shall be housing, security and comfort”.
Many years later upon the attainment of democracy in 1994 and in giving effect to this important injunction the ANC built houses to provide shelter and other amenities such as water and sanitation as part of human dignity, security and comfort.
This was after the ANC inherited a system where people were disposed, lived in squalor and conditions that offended on human dignity. It was a brutal system of arbitrary land dispossession, landlessness and the absence of shelter which impugned upon dignity, comfort and security.
To guarantee the dignity of the people and in ensuring that there is housing, security and comfort the ANC led government is embarking of the “Title Deeds Friday”. This campaign is rolled out nationally, guaranteeing society ownership and security over their own houses and land. This is a reversal of the ugly vestiges of apartheid where our people owned nothing, and subjected them to inhumane evictions.
The ANC prides itself with its work of advancing the Freedom Charter and the right to water, sanitation, land and housing, and most importantly ownership and rights enshrined in the Constitution of the country. The campaign on title deeds is the restoration of human dignity and a guarantee of human dignity.
