The African National Congress (ANC) on Monday night said in a statement that its member of Parliament (MP) Advocate Hishaam Mohamed died in the late afternoon. 

"It is with deep sadness that we confirm the death of comrade Hishaam Mohamed at 5.30pm today (Monday)," the statement said.

The ruling party said that Mohamed was a "dedicated and unselfish cadre of our movement and servant of the people".

Mohamed joined the national assembly as an MP for the ANC in 2019. Prior to that he had served as the provincial head of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development for 27 years.

The cause of death was not disclosed.
