The ANC has learned with deep shock and sadness of the passing of Stanley Tshabalala. Affectionately known as Bra Stan or Screamer, he was the face of South African soccer.
Involved at the grassroots level and building football into a professional sport, Bra Stan transformed South African football into a formidable force that is a marvel on the continent and globally, competing with the best in the world. Bra Stan played an important role in building Bafana Bafana into a powerhouse, contributing to its growth internationally as the head coach.
South Africa prides itself on the growth, performance, and competitiveness of the national senior team, so Bra Stan’s passing leaves a huge void in the sporting fraternity, the country’s football development programmes and the development of sporting facilities. He is famously known for his unique "Piano and Shoe Shine" invention whilst at the helm of Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club. He coached a number of clubs and remained involved with Orlando Pirates until his final days.
Bra Stan had a passion for football from Obhuqwini to the hinterlands, travelling every corner of the country scouting and nurturing talent. His famous scream has gone silent.
The ANC joins the family of the Sea Robbers, the South African Football Association (SAFA), the Premier Soccer League, sponsors, the sporting fraternity, and the country in mourning Bra Stan. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Buccaneers and the Tshabalala family.
A Buccaneer to the end. Rest in peace, Bra Stan. Once a Pirate, always a Pirate!
