The African National Congress (ANC) mourns the passing of South African music legend and icon, Steve Kekana. Kekana passed on after a long illness.
The renowned singer-songwriter lost his sight at the age of five. His life is a story of the triumph of perseverence and resilience against adversity. He defeated the most formidable odds to become an Advocate and a successful musician.
He holds LLB and B Juris degrees. He was recently appointed lecturer of law at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
Kekana has produced over 40 albums in his career. In 1979 and 1989, Kekana won the SABC Black Music Award for best male vocalist. He went on to win numerous awards, including the South African Music Awards (SAMA) Lifetime achievement award in 2018.
Steve Kekana will be remembered for his hit song, "Take Your Love".
The ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the people of South African as a whole. We hope they will find solace in the knowledge that the entire country shares in their grief. We wish them strength and fortitude during this difficult time.
