On Saturday, 25 March 2023 the African National Congress (ANC) learned about the passing of its veteran, Comrade Moosa “Mosie” Moolla. A beloved elder, friend, leader and mentor to many who was known for his vibrancy, humour and captive insight, Comrade Mosie passed away at the age of eighty-eight years.

Comrade Mosie was requested to resign from his place of employment and rather serve the National Action Council of the Congress of the People (COP) on a full-time basis as part of its Secretariat. In this role Comrade Mosie was responsible for ensuring that decisions were effectively conveyed to all provincial and regional structures. He continued in this role of the COP campaign until adoption of the Freedom Charter in Kliptown on 25 and 26 June 1955.

Before going in exile for twenty-eight years where Comrade Mosie served the ANC as an exemplary revolutionary diplomat in numerous capacities, he demonstrated a determined spirit against the brutal Apartheid regime even after arrest and in the face of possible death. During December 1956 Comrade Mosie formed part of comrades who were arrested on the charge of high treason whose guilty finding could mean death. The Treason Trial, as it came to be known, had a heavy toll on many and in some cases even led to families breaking up. All accused in the

Treason Trial were subsequently acquitted following a two year marathon trial. It is after a successful escape from the Apartheid regime’s prison after getting arrested on 10 May 1963 that Comrade Mosie went into exile. The ANC then facilitated both military and intelligence training for Comrade Mosie. He also formed part of ANC Department of Information and Publicity and also spend an extensive period serving as an exiled ANC’s diplomat. At the turn of democracy Cde Mosie returned to serve in the ANC’s Department of International Affairs. He was also chosen as part of a delegation at CODESA.
Comrade Mosie was later appointed to continue his diplomacy role, but now on behalf of a democratically elected and legitimate government of the Republic of South Africa.

May the bright and much-loved spirit of Comrade Moosa “Mosie” Moolla live on. The ANC is deeply saddened by the passing of its adored veteran and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, friends and comrades.
