The ANC in eThekwini Region wishes to congratulate members of the Regional Executive Committee who have been deployed to serve as members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.

The people of eThekwini Municipality and the province as a whole have many reasons to pin their hopes on Comrade Mpume Ntshangase, Cde Zinhle Cele and Cde Vuyiswa Caluza. We are proud that this region will be represented by tried and tested comrades who will ensure that the ANC-led government moves with speed to implement the resolutions adopted at NASREC.

These include land expropriation without compensation, the nationalisation of the South African Reserve Bank, Radical Economic Transformation and Free Education to name but a few. In addition, we are confident that our comrades who have been deployed will ensure that the legislature as an important arm of government plays, effectively, its oversight role over the executive.

Critically, we congratulate the Provincial Chairperson Sihle Zikalala on being elected as the Premier of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal. We have noted his acknowledgement that the people of this province expect nothing from members of the KZN Legislature other than speed in service delivery. We welcome his commitment that he will ensure that the ANC-led government do not disappoint those who voted on the 8th May 2019.

On another issue, the ANC in eThekwini Region is calling upon its volunteers and communities in Bhambayi – Inanda and surrounding areas to come forward with information that may assist the police.  This follows the murder of two metro police officers outside the house of ward councillor Moses Zulu.

It is unfortunate that this barbaric act takes place months after law enforcement agencies, provincial and local leaders launched provincial safety months in Inanda. This event which was well attended by communities, was supported by the ANC in the region and was aimed at a building a united front against crime.

As the ANC in eThekwini Region we reiterate our call that ANC volunteers must continue to mobilize communities to stand up against any form of crime. We must intensify the fight against crime, in all its manifestations - from the unacceptable level of murders, assaults, robberies, high-jacking to domestic violence.  The culture of impunity should not be tolerated in this region.

Now that elections are over, we have undertaken to intensify the rollout of Thuma Mina campaign in order to unite our communities. This campaign provides us with an opportunity to stand together in public disapproval of any form of crime in our communities. Let us report to the law enforcement agencies those who are involved in any criminal activities.

We remind our communities that the Thuma Mina acknowledges the role of each individual, each organization or grouping, each community, each leader, each government department

In conclusion, we commend the Head of Metro Police Steve Middleton for doubling his efforts to towards ensuring the creation of safe haven in the streets of eThekwini Municipality.  We are encouraged by the working relationship with KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Lucky Mkhwanazi.

We are confident that despite this major setback, law enforcement agencies under the leadership of both Mkhwanazi and Middleton will continue to act firmly and act decisively to root out rogue elements that are behind the killing of the innocent members of society in our region.

We convey our deepest condolences to the families of the departed Metro Police Officers.
