The DA in eThekwini has written to the City Manager, Musa Mbhele calling for answers for the Mathinini transit camp residents that have been subjected to inhumane living conditions for almost two decades now (view letter here).
This follows the DA’s oversight visit to this community in Chesterville where they donated materials to help stabilise their homes and roofs in the prospect of floods/rains.
Since 2006, the over 700 residents in this community have been living in these structures after the ANC-run eThekwini had destroyed their homes and promised them proper housing in three months. Almost two decades later and they are still waiting.
It has become evident that this government boasts of being pro-poor but this has never been the case, it is only capable of subjecting our people to inhumane conditions, and violation of their basic human rights. These structures are not fit for humans to live in as permanent residents as it has become for these occupants.
They have no proper ablution facilities, waste management services or safe social spaces for children to play. The residents have been neglected by the ANC-EFF-led eThekwini municipality.
Moreover, with floods becoming prevalent these is posing a danger.
The DA will continue fighting for the residents of Mathinini and ensure accountability from the ANC-EFF bloc. Residents of eThekwini deserve a government that prioritizes service delivery.
Issued by Councillor Sanelisiwe Chebure - DA eThekwini Councillor
