The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Wednesday said it would not allow James Aguma to escape accountability following his resignation from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on Wednesday.
DA deputy chief whip Mike Waters said while the resignation of the suspended chief executive was welcomed, it did not exonerate him from serious allegations stemming from his tenure as chief executive and chief financial officer.
“Aguma’s decision to resign instead of facing a disciplinary hearing does not mean he is going to be let off the hook for his part in the institutional breakdown at the SABC,” said Waters.
“Aguma faces serious accusations, including tender irregularities and overseeing massive fruitless and wasteful expenditure, and reports that his resignation will result in the SABC withdrawing charges are concerning. Equally so reports that he is set for a golden handshake.”
