AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel announced on Tuesday that the civil rights organisation will appear in the Supreme Court of Appeal to appeal the Equality Court’s finding that the ‘Kill the Boer’ chant is not hate speech.
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema sang the song again during the EFF’s tenth-anniversary celebrations over the weekend.
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhiusen announced on Monday that his party will be filing a complaint with Parliament’s ethics committee against Malema.
Kriel says that his organisation’s appeal case forms part of AfriForum’s strategy to legally oppose Malema’s “racist and polarising actions” and for the promotion of mutual recognition and respect between cultural communities.
AfriForum has already appointed a prominent senior advocate and legal team to call Malema to account in the Supreme Court of Appeal and the organisation is ready to even approach the Constitutional Court if necessary.
Kriel said if his organisation "finds no joy locally”, it will pursue the case internationally as it believes that the song incites genocide against minorities.
