AfriForum kicked off a comprehensive campaign today to keep the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality out of the hands of an EFF-ANC coalition. This follows ActionSA’s announcement that it’s seriously considering siding with the ANC and the EFF to oust the Mayor, Cilliers Brink, and thereby destroy the DA-led multi-party coalition in the Metro. The public can put a stop to such a future by visiting the website www.redpretoria.co.za and signing AfriForum’s petition. By signing the petition, an automatic letter will be sent to the leaders of ActionSA, DA, IVP, ACDP and VF+ to settle the disputes in the coalition as soon as possible.

The ANC tabled a motion of no confidence in Brink last week, which was to be put to a vote on Friday. However, the DA brought an urgent application in the Pretoria High Court to have the motion declared unlawful. This legal action caused the ANC to withdraw its motion, but with the promise that it would be back in 14 days with a new one.

According to Ernst van Zyl, Head of Public Relations at AfriForum, the Tshwane Metro will once again fall into disarray if the current ruling coalition falls apart. Therefore, urgent action is needed before the current coalition’s fate is decided in less than two weeks.

“The Metro’s current coalition has already made progress, particularly in Pretoria, to give communities more control to improve and safeguard their neighbourhoods. However, this is now in jeopardy. Should there be political instability again it will undoubtedly contribute to the poor performance of the Municipality,” says Van Zyl. “It’s also outrageous that a party like the EFF, which undermines the rule of law, sows discord and even said during a recent council meeting that they want to ‘m**r a Boer’, can now possibly form part of a new municipal government,” he adds.

“It’s time for the residents of the Tshwane Metro to make their voices heard by making it loud and clear that they will do everything in their power to prevent an EFF-ANC coalition from gaining power over the Metro. Any party willing to work with the EFF must also know that they are choosing the side of hatred, deterioration and disorder. If the Tshwane Metro is handed over to the EFF-ANC coalition, the residents will not forget who handed it to them,” concludes Van Zyl.

Visit www.redpretoria.co.za and add your name to the petition to prevent the EFF and its partners from getting involved in the administration of the Tshwane Metro.
