All academic and school activities at the Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging are continuing without interruption, despite a small group of about 40 protestors (mainly EFF and ANC members) that are singing and dancing in front of the school gates.
This protest flows from the North Gauteng High Court ruling to refuse 55 learners’ access to this school. The court ruled in the school’s favour and set aside the Gauteng Department of Education’s order that 55 English-speaking learners must be allowed at this school.
Hoërskool Overvaal approached the court following the Department’s order because the school was already full and does not possess the necessary resources to accommodate these 55 learners.
According to Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s Head of Community Safety, the AfriForum neighbourhood watch, South African Police Service (SAPS) and private security is on the scene and the situation is under control.
“The learners and teachers are excited about the new year that lies ahead and currently no school or academic activities are being disrupted by the protest outside the school.”
Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Education, is allegedly on his way to the school. AfriForum will monitor the situation.
