As climate finance gains momentum globally, the role of voluntary carbon markets in supporting Africa’s sustainability and development ambitions is attracting increasing attention. While carbon markets offer the prospect of unlocking investment for emissions reduction, ecosystem restoration and community development, questions remain around market integrity, governance, transparency and the equitable distribution of benefits.

These issues will form the focus of an upcoming Sustainability and ESG Africa Conference webinar, The Future of Voluntary Carbon Markets in Africa: From Potential to Value, taking place on Thursday, June 11, 2026, hosted in partnership with Creamer Media Webinars. The session will bring together industry experts to examine how African countries and businesses can engage with voluntary carbon markets in a way that delivers both environmental and economic value.

As African governments and companies seek new avenues to finance climate action, voluntary carbon markets are increasingly viewed as a potential mechanism for attracting investment into projects that reduce emissions, conserve biodiversity and support sustainable development. However, market participants continue to face scrutiny over issues such as credit quality, pricing mechanisms, governance structures and the credibility of carbon reduction claims.

The webinar will explore how Africa can position itself to capture greater value from these markets while ensuring that benefits reach local communities and contribute meaningfully to national development objectives. Discussions will also examine the policy, regulatory and institutional frameworks required to support credible participation and long-term market growth.

Among the key questions to be addressed are how African companies and governments should incorporate voluntary carbon markets into broader climate, investment and development strategies; what opportunities these markets present at both corporate and national levels; and how risks relating to governance, credibility and market value can be effectively managed. The panel will also consider what constitutes a high-integrity carbon project in the African context and what practical steps organisations should take when evaluating participation in the market.

The discussion will feature a panel of experienced practitioners with expertise spanning climate policy, sustainability, finance and carbon trading.

As Africa seeks to balance climate commitments with economic development priorities, voluntary carbon markets are likely to remain an important area of debate. This webinar aims to provide business leaders, sustainability professionals, policymakers and investors with practical insights into how these markets are evolving and what is required to ensure they deliver lasting value for the continent.
