AfriBusiness welcomes Speaker Baleka Mbete’s decision that the vote of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma to be held in Parliament on 8 August 2017 will be done via a secret ballot.
According to Armand Greyling, Law and Policy Analyst at AfriBusiness, this is an important decision in our young democracy, where for the first time in years the principles of an open and transparent democracy and the sovereignty of the rule of law has been placed above all else.
“We are pleased with the Speaker’s decision as well as the reasoning behind this decision. Whether or not it will lead to the removal of Jacob Zuma as president remains to be seen, but for the people of South Africa, this is a step in the right direction,” says Greyling.
