ActionSA has formally written to the Speaker of Parliament to caution against any delays to the commencement of the work of the Impeachment Committee, following the ANC’s failure to meet the prescribed deadline for the submission of its nominees.

While the ANC has since made its submission, with the Speaker having communicated the membership composition to serve on the committee, we believe that the critical work of this committee cannot begin under circumstances characterised by avoidable delays or potentially intentional obstruction by the ANC. The predicament this 7th administration finds itself in after the Constitutional court ruling is precisely because of this.

Notwithstanding the President’s formal submission of his papers in the Western Cape High Court today, the work of the committee must proceed unimpeded.

It must be noted that while the Speaker’s role in facilitating the implementation of the Constitutional Court’s ruling is appreciated, we do however note concerns raised that the effective functioning of the committee must be protected from party-political delays that risk undermining both the integrity and urgency of its mandate.

ActionSA is fully focused on ensuring that the committee’s work proceeds without any delay, as the gravity and national importance of its mandate to test the veracity of the serious charges against the President demand an urgent, credible and uninterrupted process.
