ActionSA welcomes the arrest of Malusi Booi, former DA City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member, in connection with a fraud and tender corruption case on Monday evening in the Eastern Cape.

His overdue arrest follows a raid on Booi’s offices by the SAPS Commercial Crimes Unit in March last year, while he was serving as the Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements for the Democratic Alliance.

ActionSA is deeply concerned by the revelations of this case, but certainly not surprised as the recent raid and subsequent arrest of Malusi Booi have exposed the long-rumoured ties between criminal syndicates and senior City of Cape Town officials.

In stark focus is the fact that this scandal reveals how taxpayer funds have been siphoned off to enrich corrupt officials and gang leaders and finance their criminal enterprises.

ActionSA has previously raised the alarm about the cancerous corruption and criminal underworld operating with near impunity in the Western Cape, the consequences of which have been severe, with individuals who are meant to protect the interests of citizens instead colluding with murderous gangs.

While it is encouraging that the arrest has finally taken place, after a year and six months, ActionSA is alarmed that more than a year has elapsed since the initial raid, with no action having been taken against Mr Booi until now.

ActionSA believes that this matter is just the tip of the iceberg, and as the country focuses on the pervasive issue of construction mafias, which feature prominently in the Booi case, this is just the beginning of a broader expose of the widespread corruption that has enabled these powerful construction mafias to wield their violent influence.
