In echoing the communication by the chair of council, Ms Babalwa Ngonyama, there is no greater priority at present but to secure the functionality of our institution. We believe that the reversal of Councils decision would be a step in the right direction towards stabilising governance at the University.
At no point should we take for granted the weight of the concerns raised over the past few weeks, as it relates to governance at the University of Cape Town. It is therefore incredibly important that an independent inquiry be instituted to establish the facts and with its findings, Council and the University’s Senate put in place the appropriate measures to bring an end to this unnecessary volatility.
Our concern, as ActionSA, is that students are most effected when those employed to respond to their needs are preoccupied with matters that distract from the immediate challenges faced by students and staff, which notably include the unreliable energy supply affecting teaching and learning.
Our call is straightforward. The University Executives and Leadership need to get their act together and recalibrate their focus back towards pursuing the best interests of this institution and its students.
