ActionSA Joburg Caucus has noted, with concern, the misuse of funds that were earmarked for the development of the Helen Joseph Women hostel in Alexandra.
The funds, which amount to R17.5 million, were allocated for the renovation purposes of the hostel. However, during the latest oversight visit by the City of Johannesburg Section 79 Petition Committee, it was revealed that none of the work completed amounted to the allocated budget.
The hostel is instead dilapidated due to a lack of infrastructure repairs, subjecting women to unpleasant living conditions.
ActionSA believes that corruption and a lack of accountability from human settlement officials has compromised people's right to an adequate standard of living.
Today, we reaffirm our full support for Helen Joseph's hostel dwellers.
ActionSA will be gathering more evidence that will be presented to the Public Protector’s Office for a formal investigation into this matter.
We call upon Alexandra residents to join us in this battle for a better life for all, regardless of their political affiliation.
ActionSA declares corruption as the nation's number one enemy and urges South Africans to have zero tolerance for any sort of corruption, whether it occurs in the public or private sector.
Issued by ActionSA Joburg Caucus Member, Cllr Shadrack Mkhonto
