ActionSA Students Chapter’s National Executive Council is pleased to announce that University of Cape Town (UCT) Students’ Chapter has won 2 seats following preliminary Students Representative Council (SRC) results pronounced by UCT officials and the Electoral Commission.

This tremendous victory comes after the UCT Students’ Chapter was sanctioned by the Electoral Commission, where our SRC candidates were banned from campaigning and participating in political activities for a period of four (4) days during the 10-day elections campaign period.

We have always held the view that the sanctions imposed on ActionSA Students’ Chapter UCT candidates were a desperate gatekeeping attempt from those who benefit from the status quo to deny the students an opportunity to fully participate in the democratic processes enjoyed everywhere in our country. 

Our emergence as the second biggest student organisation within the university as first-time contestants is an indication that the students are ready to be led by an alternative structure. 

The ActionSA Students’ Chapter NEC congratulates the Students’ Chapter UCT team on their hard work and the decisive victory delivered, with our candidates getting 8 424 votes overall. 

Results as per SRC seats allocation:

1.    EFFSC                                        3 seats

2.    ActionSA                                    2 seats

3.    DASO                                        0 Seats

4.    Independent candidates              10 seats

Our priority as ActionSA Students’ Chapter has always been to advance the rights of students and enhance the quality of student life and education in the University of Cape Town.  It is to that end, that ActionSA Students Chapter delegation consisting of the National Executive Council and UCT Campus Leaders, will engage with independent candidates who won, to form a stable and ethical coalition government that will serve the best interest of the students.

It is our firm belief that the students of UCT have rejected the EFFSC which has been governing with the outright majority since 2018. We would like to commend the students for expressing their dissatisfaction with the current governing leadership by participating in the democratic process of voting. 

To that end, ActionSA Students’ Chapter would like to urge all eligible young people to register to vote for the 2024 National elections and decide the leadership of this country, South Africa.
