After holding recent engagements with the Inkatha Freedom Party, Freedom Front Plus and the African Christian Democratic Party, ActionSA has confirmed Johannesburg caucus leader Funzi Ngobeni as a nominee for the mayoral position in Johannesburg.
News of Ngobeni’s nomination comes in the wake of the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) unilateral announcement of Mpho Phalatse’s candidature.
ActionSA has expressed appreciation to its coalition partners for demonstrating their confidence in Ngobeni’s nomination.
“There have also been engagements with other parties represented in the Johannesburg council, many of whom see the merit in a coalition that is led by a party other than the ANC or the DA,” ActionSA chairperson Michael Beaumont stated.
Ngobeni has previously served on the Johannesburg Mayoral Committee in 2016 and 2021, he has been a Member of the Mayoral Committee in Finance, Development Planning and Transport and has led executive business.
His recent history of working in coalitions proved to be the catalyst in garnering support from ActionSA’s coalition partners. However, efforts to seek the support of Ngobeni’s nomination were spurned by the DA as it remained steadfast in its unilateral support of Phalatse.
“ActionSA is proud to stand among parties that have proven their unequivocal commitment to providing an alternative to the ANC and EFF in Johannesburg as well as in the 2024 elections,” Beaumont said.
