While on the campaign train in Ward 53, Soweto, ActionSA ground activists discovered that the community is deeply concerned about the identification process of recipients and allocation of houses in Lufhereng township, Soweto.

Launched in 2008, the housing project was to be comprised of 6 000 rental units, 6 000 bonded units and 12 000 RDP units. The development would also include schools, clinics, crèches, agricultural and commercial holdings.

However, fourteen years later the project has yet to be completed. Even more concerning is that despite completion, people have already been allocated housing units.

Corruption related to RDP housing in the City of Johannesburg has become common place. Community members complain about corrupt City officials who have so far gotten away with housing corruption in the City, allocating these much needed homes for the poor to their relatives and other politically connected persons that include undocumented foreign nationals.

ActionSA Joburg Caucus is committed to serving the people of the City of Johannesburg and to safeguarding their interests above party politics. No one deny the fact that the tension between the demand for adequate housing and the provision thereof puts is a heavy burden that cannot be shouldered by residents alone. The City must work tirelessly to alleviate this burden and root out corruption in RDP housing provision for needy residents of Johannesburg.

Issued by ActionSA Johannesburg Caucus Chief Whip Marcel Coutriers
