ActionSA condemns the violent trespassing at the Matsediso Primary School in Katlehong, where machete and rifle wielding men marched on the school's premises, threatening staff, learners, and parents.

ActionSA believes that this heinous act underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures in our schools, especially in high-risk communities. Consequently, there is an urgent need for law enforcement to ensure that incidents like the one that transpired yesterday are never repeated.

ActionSA calls for immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore safety at the Matsediso Primary School. It is vital to ensure that our children can learn in a peaceful and conducive environment, and therefore all stakeholders, including the Department of Basic Education, the Provincial Government, and law enforcement, must work collectively to safeguard this fundamental right.

Importantly, it is incumbent on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to provide an update on the seizure of the weapons, as well as for the Provincial Department of Education to ensure that learners and staff receive the necessary support.

ActionSA will continue to monitor progress on the Police's and Education Department's response to this matter and will ensure that all stakeholders put sufficient mechanisms in place to make this incident the last of its kind, ensuring that schools remain sanctuaries of learning and growth, not scenes of terror and violence.
