As the harsh winter cold sets in and our energy crisis reaches unprecedented levels with rolling blackouts surpassing stage 6, vulnerable communities are compelled to seek alternative energy solutions like gas and open fires during the winter season. Unfortunately, this poses a significant fire risk.

To address this pressing concern, the Western Cape Government has taken proactive steps by installing 13,000 fire alarm systems throughout informal settlements in the province. These fire alarms play a crucial role in providing early warnings and ensuring the safety of communities in the Western Cape. To date, R2.6 million has been spent on these fire alarm systems.

Moreover, the Western Cape Government has also invested R1.85 million in hazard awareness campaigns specifically targeting Grade 1-7 learners. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the potential hazards and educate the younger generation about fire safety measures.

The Western Cape now also has more firefighting appliances than all the other provinces combined. Currently, the province has 664 different firefighting appliances and includes structural, mountainous, veld, and hazmat firefighting appliances. By strategically allocating these resources, the province is well-positioned to respond effectively to any potential fire outbreaks.

Through the installation of 13 000 fire alarm systems, investment in hazard awareness campaigns, and the expansion of our firefighting resources, the DA- run Western Cape Government have taken proactive measures to mitigate the risks faced by vulnerable communities.
