Zweli Mkhize
Zweli Mkhize is a South African politician and medical doctor who has held several senior government positions. He served as Minister of Health from 2019 to 2021 under President Cyril Ramaphosa, a tenure marked by the country's response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Mkhize is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and previously held the position of Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2014 to 2018. Before his national ministerial appointments, he served as premier of KwaZulu-Natal province from 2009 to 2013, where he focused on economic development and infrastructure delivery. His political career also includes serving as treasurer-general of the ANC from 2007 to 2017, a key position within the party's national executive committee. Mkhize qualified as a medical doctor and practised as a general practitioner before entering full-time politics. He has been a prominent figure in ANC politics for decades, having been active in the anti-apartheid struggle and serving in various provincial and national structures. His tenure as health minister ended amid controversy over a communications contract, after which he resigned in August 2021. Mkhize remains an influential figure within the ANC and South African political landscape, with a career spanning healthcare, provincial governance and national cabinet portfolios.
