Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa, bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the west, Zambia to the north and Mozambique to the east. The capital and largest city is Harare. The country has a population of approximately 15-million people and an economy historically dominated by agriculture, mining and tourism. Zimbabwe is rich in mineral resources, including gold, platinum-group metals, diamonds, coal, chrome and lithium, making mining a cornerstone of export earnings and foreign-currency generation. The currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, though the US dollar and South African rand are widely used in transactions. The government is a presidential republic, with executive power vested in the president. Zimbabwe is a member of the Southern African Development Community, the African Union and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. The country gained independence from Britain in 1980, transitioning from the former Rhodesia, and has since experienced significant economic and political challenges, including hyperinflation in the late 2000s and ongoing efforts at economic stabilisation and reform.
