Xi Jinping
Xi Jinping is the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, President of the People's Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, making him the paramount leader of China since 2012. He was born in Beijing in 1953 and is the son of revolutionary veteran Xi Zhongxun. Xi rose through the party ranks serving in various provincial leadership roles, including party chief of Zhejiang province and Shanghai, before joining the Politburo Standing Committee in 2007. He assumed the top leadership position in 2012 and consolidated power through anti-corruption campaigns and constitutional amendments that removed presidential term limits in 2018. His signature policies include the Belt and Road Initiative, a global infrastructure development strategy, and the concept of the "Chinese Dream" of national rejuvenation. Xi has overseen a more assertive Chinese foreign policy, particularly regarding territorial claims in the South China Sea and the status of Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province. Under his leadership, China has pursued closer economic ties with African nations and expanded its diplomatic influence across the continent. He has centralised authority within the party structure to a degree not seen since Mao Zedong, earning him the designation of "core" leader. Xi's tenure has been marked by increased state control over the economy, tighter ideological discipline, and a more prominent role for China on the global stage.
