Western Cape
The Western Cape is a province of South Africa, with its capital in Cape Town. It is the country's fourth-largest province by population and a major economic hub, contributing about 14% of national gross domestic product. The province is renowned for its diverse economy, spanning agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, finance and technology services. Wine production, fruit exports and fishing are cornerstone agricultural activities, supported by a Mediterranean climate and fertile valleys. Cape Town serves as the legislative capital of South Africa and is a leading destination for international tourism, conferences and film production. The Western Cape hosts significant port and logistics infrastructure, including the Port of Cape Town and Saldanha Bay, a deep-water harbour critical to iron-ore exports. The province has emerged as a technology and innovation centre, attracting startups, venture capital and skills in software development, fintech and renewable energy. It is governed by a provincial administration and has historically differed politically from the national government. Unemployment, spatial inequality and water security remain pressing socioeconomic challenges. The Western Cape's strategic location, skills base and infrastructure continue to underpin its role as a gateway for trade and investment into Africa.
