West Africa
West Africa is a subregion of the African continent bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west, the Sahara Desert to the north, and the central African highlands to the east. It comprises 16 countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Benin, Togo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Niger, Mauritania, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. The region is home to more than 400-million people and represents one of Africa's most economically diverse areas. West Africa's economy is anchored by significant natural resource endowments, including oil and gas reserves in Nigeria and Ghana, gold and other minerals across the Sahel belt, and cocoa production in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. The region also supports substantial agricultural activity, with crops ranging from cashews and palm oil to cotton and rubber. Major regional institutions include the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), which promotes economic integration and political stability across member states. The mining sector plays a particularly important role in countries such as Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso, where gold extraction contributes significantly to export earnings and government revenue. West Africa's strategic position along major shipping routes and its growing consumer markets have attracted increasing foreign investment in infrastructure, telecommunications and manufacturing. The region faces development challenges including infrastructure deficits, political instability in some areas and the need for economic diversification, but continues to register notable growth in sectors such as technology, financial services and renewable energy.
